    Description

1955 San Francisco Dons NCAA Championship Award Plaque and Senate Resolution Document
These items were awarded to team player Robert Wiebusch and were purchased from his estate (See photo 11. In the team photo he is in the second row, last person on the right, #19.  This photo is not included in the sale).
Two items are included in this sale:
    1. 1955 San Francisco Dons NCAA Championship Award Plaque (Photo #1)
    2. Extremely rare Senate Resolution Document given to each player of the 1955 San Francisco Dons team (Photo #2)
The Senate Resolution by Senator Robert McCarthy - Print signed by Harold J. Powers (President of the Senate).
This a wonderful pair of awards given to a known player of the team. It would be a significant addition to any basketball/sports collection.
Steve Balchios 1955 Plaque, alone, sold for 00 at auction in 2012, without a Senate Resolution Document (see live auctioneers photo.  Photo #12).  Auction houses also charge a significant buyers premium, usually in excess of 18%, on top of taxes.
The 1954-55 San Francisco Dons entered the '55 NCAA Tournament as the top-ranked team in the nation after posting a 28-1 regular season record. The Dons won their first two games of the tournament by an average of 21 points and advanced to the Elite Eight to face the Oregon State Beavers. The Dons with future Hall of Famers, Bill Russell and K.C. Jones, edged out a one-point win to move on and face Colorado in the Final Four. The Dons easily handled the Buffaloes and found themselves in the Championship game against the La Salle Explorers, the defending champs. Russell and Jones dominated the explorers, racking 47 points total on their way to a 14-point victory. It was the University's first championship and the first of back-to-back titles for the USF Dons.
A plaque was presented to each player after the University of San Francisco Dons won the 17th Annual NCAA Basketball Championship in 1955. The award features a brass basketball player and "NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP" in relief. Below is a brass plaque that reads "17TH ANNUAL TOURNAMENT '55 - FIRST PLACE" above the casted image of the official NCAA seal.
